"Indie-folk trio, A Thousand Years at Sea, returns to the 142 Throckmorton Theatre with an arsenal of new music that seamlessly combines lyrical integrity with musical passion and artistry. Colin Cotter (vox, fiddle, guitar), Ethan Lewis (vox, fiddle, guitar), and Neil Pearlman's (keyboard, mandolin) fusion of genres ranging from Celtic and folk to jazz and rock showcases their prodigious musicianship, and is an experience not to be missed.
A Thousand Years at Sea will be joined by fiddlers Tuula Cotter and Marika Cotter, as well as percussionist Angus Martin to form "The Midsummer Fiddle Band," which will play dance music as the second portion of the show.
Colin Cotter has shown himself to be a prolific composer and lyricist, writing eight of the songs on ATYAS's debut album, Silver Shores Await. He has honed his skills as a fiddler, guitarist, and singer by gigging extensively, from cafes in San Fransisco to The Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen, Scotland to grungy bars in New York City. A respected multi-instrumentalist, Colin is working on several projects as a composer, fiddler, accompanist, and creative collaborator.
Years of training on the violin have given Ethan Lewis a firm foundation upon which his musical ingenuity builds. With drummer Isaac James and bassist Dave Chapman he formed the band "Root Down One," which is an outlet for his Cali-Scottish fiddling and compositions. When he isn't gigging, Ethan works as a fiddle teacher, instructing many students privately, as well as at Alasdair Fraser's Sierra Fiddle Camp.
Multi-instrumentalist and dancer Neil Pearlman is emerging as one of the traditional music scene's most innovative young artists. Legendary Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland said that "watching Neil's hands on the piano is like watching two spiders on crack!" His piano style seamlessly blends Cape Breton traditions with jazz harmony and funk/rock grooves. The result is a exciting new sound that remains true to its traditional roots. An accomplished Cape Breton step dancer and mandolinist as well, Neil grew up in the family band Highland Soles and has performed with many of the best musicians on the traditional music scene today, including Natalie MacMaster, Alasdair Fraser, Seamus Connolly, Kimberley Fraser, Abby Newton, Frank Ferrel, Maeve Gilchrist, Mike Vass and Ed Pearlman.
